2023-04-13 09:41:20 +0200 <jusa> hello! I recently updated to xmonad 0.17.2 (xmonad-contrib HEAD), I'm running xmonad as KDE wm, and while my xmonad.hs was ok without changes, my font for subTabbed (XMonad.Layout.SubLayouts) changed and I have no idea how to control that anymore.. I tried to rtfm and sublayouts and even modify all the default xft values to no effect. So the question is, how can I change the default font used in
2023-04-13 09:41:21 +0200 <jusa> these cases? I vaguely remember seeing some ENV variable related to xft at some point but couldn't find it anymore at least..
2023-04-13 09:42:37 +0200 <geekosaur> no environment variable, at least for xmonad
2023-04-13 09:42:57 +0200 <jusa> ok, then I just remember that part wrong
2023-04-13 09:43:11 +0200 <geekosaur> https://github.com/geekosaur/xmonad.hs/blob/skkukuk/xmonad.hs#L294 is the usual way although it's not using subTabbed
2023-04-13 09:45:31 +0200 <jusa> ok, thanks, what I could figure out was that if I would use that "proper" tabbed instead of subTabbed I could use theme for defining stuff.. I'm just lazy and would stick with my current hack if possible :) I'll take a look of your config
2023-04-13 09:46:16 +0200 <geekosaur> it looks like you need to make your own copy of `subTabbed` (https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-contrib-0.17.1/docs/src/XMonad.Layout.SubLayouts.html#sā€¦) with the font change applied to `X.def`
2023-04-13 09:47:59 +0200 <geekosaur> all my config shows is how to apply that font change
2023-04-13 10:10:50 +0200 <geekosaur> also if you read the docs at the end of SubLayouts you'll find that tabbed and sublayouts don't really mix that well and you can end up with tabs that stick around when they shouldn't
2023-04-13 10:47:02 +0200 <jusa> yep.. I tried to define fontName in SubLayouts but that doesn't have any effect :/ I guess I just need to ditch my sublayout thing and just update the config in general

2023-04-13 21:19:28 +0200unclechu(~unclechu@2001:470:69fc:105::354)
2023-04-13 21:21:08 +0200 <Ou42> I seriously don't know your timezone. Do you ever sleep?!
2023-04-13 21:21:28 +0200 <geekosaur> I try to
2023-04-13 21:21:30 +0200 <Ou42> but glad you're here... I'm hitting another Linux issue
2023-04-13 21:21:53 +0200 <geekosaur> mostly US/Eastern but of late I've had this annoying tendency to wake up around 3am
2023-04-13 21:22:19 +0200 <geekosaur> so yeh, I can be out here at odd times
2023-04-13 21:22:45 +0200 <Ou42> eesh. Well, no worries if you need to jet for a power nap
2023-04-13 21:23:12 +0200 <Ou42> Here's the deal: I finally got back into coding after a couple weeks off and got a new Personal Access Token for GitHub...
2023-04-13 21:23:17 +0200 <geekosaur> I just slept in really late once I got back to sleep today
2023-04-13 21:23:24 +0200 <Ou42> and couldn't get git to push to GH.
2023-04-13 21:23:59 +0200 <geekosaur> not sure I can help with that, I just use a ssh key
2023-04-13 21:24:40 +0200 <Ou42> I used to use ssh, but was nudged to switch over
2023-04-13 21:25:25 +0200 <Ou42> huh. OK, well, I know about the section of XMonad that allows "spawnOnce" do you think that's what might need to be done? I need to start the gnome-keyring and/or something else?
2023-04-13 21:26:58 +0200 <Ou42> OTOH
2023-04-13 21:27:31 +0200 <geekosaur> you'll need some keyring provider, yes. looks like mate is running `gnome-keyring-daemon --daemonize --login`
2023-04-13 21:27:31 +0200 <Ou42> The other interpretation is to imitate your setup. Do you happen to have a blog post or write-up on why you chose to keep MATE, but replace the WM?
2023-04-13 21:27:53 +0200 <geekosaur> I'mnot much of a blogger
2023-04-13 21:28:18 +0200 <Ou42> s'ok. worth a shot. ;o)
2023-04-13 21:28:22 +0200 <geekosaur> but the main reason is I think most window managers waste too much space on frames, but I like having a full desktop environment
2023-04-13 21:28:53 +0200 <geekosaur> (especially since I'm generally using a laptop with a < 1080p display)
2023-04-13 21:29:06 +0200 <Ou42> I'm still learning ... it's taken me a while to "see" the diff between a DE and a WM.
2023-04-13 21:29:14 +0200 <Ou42> but I'm still a noob.
2023-04-13 21:29:16 +0200 <geekosaur> services
2023-04-13 21:29:30 +0200 <geekosaur> like they keyring, sound, etc.
2023-04-13 21:29:59 +0200 <Ou42> interesting. Yeah, I wish I had access to vol control and a few other things, but the learning adventure has been beneficial.
2023-04-13 21:30:02 +0200 <geekosaur> all set up for you. it also sets up multiple monitors and works around video driver/chipset quirks for you
2023-04-13 21:30:41 +0200 <Ou42> do you use Xmobar w/ it? if not, what panel do you use?
2023-04-13 21:31:24 +0200 <geekosaur> there's also a "secret" reason: since I hack on xmonad every so often I manage to crash it, and running mate-panel means I have an emergency "open terminal" button so I can recover
2023-04-13 21:33:45 +0200 <geekosaur> yesterday I managed to trip over https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad/issues/449 and would have had to nuke the session without the ability to pop a new terminal so I could recover
2023-04-13 21:33:46 +0200 <Ou42> makes sense. I'm def not bleeding edge and prefer stability.
2023-04-13 21:35:56 +0200 <Ou42> So much to learn. I got what you're talking about, but I've not yet been able to make use of that. My limited top/htop whatever seemed to be confined to the terminal I was in or something like that.
2023-04-13 21:36:02 +0200 <liskin> using a DE also saves a lot of time setting up all the applets and keybinds for wifi, bluetooth, sound, screenshots, etc.
2023-04-13 21:36:07 +0200 <Ou42> ... my interpretation is based on noob eyes.
2023-04-13 21:36:14 +0200Ou42is often mistaken
2023-04-13 21:36:45 +0200liskindid set everything up manually, and also runs a patched xmonad that backs up its state every couple mins and is auto-restarted by systemd when it crashes
2023-04-13 21:36:53 +0200 <liskin> but it's days wasted in there :-)
2023-04-13 21:37:26 +0200 <Ou42> liskin: yeah, maybe that's why I'm here?! My MO is to find things to waste time. ThisMustBeThePlace!
2023-04-13 21:37:55 +0200 <liskin> Ou42: if you want to waste time then yeah This Is The Way!
2023-04-13 21:38:46 +0200 <Ou42> liskin: You're the author of the xmonad.org tutorial, yes?
2023-04-13 21:39:30 +0200 <liskin> Ou42: no, that's Solid
2023-04-13 21:39:31 +0200 <Ou42> geekosaur: you mentioned looking at your xmonad.hs file ... now you both are scaring me J/K, but if you are running on top of MATE, is there anything special to do to outside of XMonad to get it to be the WM?
2023-04-13 21:39:50 +0200 <liskin> Ou42: I wrote large parts of INSTALL.md, but not much of a writer otherwise :-)
2023-04-13 21:40:03 +0200 <geekosaur> there's a change you need to make with `dconf-editor` to switch the WM
2023-04-13 21:40:11 +0200 <Ou42> liskin: my bad. memory is getting bad. wow. that's awful. Sorry about that.
2023-04-13 21:40:24 +0200 <geekosaur> Solid wrote the TUTORIAL iirc
2023-04-13 21:40:42 +0200 <liskin> :-D
2023-04-13 21:41:40 +0200 <Ou42> Yeah, that is a murky memory, but yeah, OK, well, he's in YATZ, eh? Yet Another Time Zone. I finally saw proof xfce4-memory-manager (sp?) is running / working. I shut the lid of the laptop and reopened it and there it was. It's working. Just not visibily from Trayer.
2023-04-13 21:42:20 +0200 <geekosaur> https://wiki.haskell.org/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_MATE documents what you need to do, including both the dconf edit and reminding you to get the menu applet to let go of the windows key so xmonad can use it
2023-04-13 21:43:10 +0200 <geekosaur> and I think you meant the power manager, not "memory" manager
2023-04-13 21:43:11 +0200 <liskin> Ou42: Solid is in CEST, as are most people who aren't in the US
2023-04-13 21:43:25 +0200 <Ou42> yes power! as in he-man. yes yes.
2023-04-13 21:44:15 +0200 <Ou42> OK, so wiki > blog. I'll try to rem.
2023-04-13 21:45:27 +0200 <Ou42> it's not yet 10pm where he is... got a phone number to call?! where is he?
2023-04-13 21:45:41 +0200 <Ou42> j/k
2023-04-13 21:46:57 +0200 <liskin> nope, don't have it :-(
2023-04-13 21:48:01 +0200 <liskin> (a fact I painfully realised when I stood in front of hauptbahnhof about to meet him a couple weeks ago with crowds of football fans all around)
2023-04-13 21:49:00 +0200 <Ou42> bummer. where's the love if we can't bug him? I'm in PST. I'm the runt of a small FP MeetUp that meets on Mondays at 7PM PST if you're ever sufering from insomnia.
2023-04-13 21:49:33 +0200 <Ou42> ... it's still online and the host recently moved to CST.
2023-04-13 21:50:25 +0200 <Ou42> football == soccer, right?
2023-04-13 21:52:06 +0200 <liskin> as an eastern european living in the UK hating all team/ball sports equally I refuse to answer that question :-)
2023-04-13 21:53:05 +0200 <Ou42> HA! I was 30 lbs ago, much in love w/ a under-loved racket sport. Never got fair play here. So, I pretty much hated all other sports.
2023-04-13 21:54:32 +0200 <Ou42> ... I had a similar situation -- hope you found him! -- but in my case, it wasn't meeting anybody. Years ago, took the kiddos to see the floats after the New Years parade. Took the Metro. Tons of ppl existed the train. We followed. It took a bit to realize they weren't excited about seeing the floats like we were...
2023-04-13 21:54:43 +0200 <Ou42> ... they were heading to the Rose Bowl (game).
2023-04-13 21:56:42 +0200 <Ou42> geekosaur: you're closer in time zone... you could make it to the MU. Just saying.
2023-04-13 22:04:00 +0200 <Ou42> hmm... room got quiet. net-split?
2023-04-13 22:04:14 +0200 <Ou42> or whatever it's called.
2023-04-13 22:04:33 +0200 <liskin> nah, just working on something
2023-04-13 22:04:40 +0200 <geekosaur> likewise
2023-04-13 22:07:07 +0200 <Ou42> no worries. usually there's "noise" ppl entering / leaving.
2023-04-13 22:11:13 +0200 <geekosaur> this channel's pretty quiet even when it comes to join/part spam
2023-04-13 22:11:37 +0200 <Ou42> it is *today* but it had a bit before. odd.
2023-04-13 22:11:37 +0200 <geekosaur> aside from when they reboot the matrix bridge which they did several times last night for some reason
2023-04-13 22:12:17 +0200 <Ou42> geekosaur: ty again for your patience and interest in leveling up a noob. That script on that wiki page feels intense, but also straightfwd.
2023-04-13 22:12:48 +0200 <Ou42> ... I'm assuming if I go down that path, I'll want to keep a separate MATE in the list of DE's I can start so I'll mess it up per usuale.
2023-04-13 22:12:54 +0200 <geekosaur> the python script? that's only relevant if your distro is already using one (some older ubuntu releases)
2023-04-13 22:13:26 +0200 <Ou42> The LUG I sometimes join -- ty covid -- the host runs MATE and loves it. I used xfce in the past and recently tried kde and like it better.
2023-04-13 22:13:41 +0200 <Ou42> but MATE's panel is a pain to setup. There's something fishy there.
2023-04-13 22:14:33 +0200 <Ou42> I'm running Mint and have Cinnamon, MATE & Xmonad currently. Can switch at the login screen.
2023-04-13 22:14:49 +0200 <geekosaur> kde needs some patches to work with xmonad, see https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad/issues/174
2023-04-13 22:15:16 +0200 <Ou42> good to know.
2023-04-13 22:15:19 +0200 <geekosaur> sadly the dconf thing for the window manager can't be done by a separate xsessions entry as far as I can determine
2023-04-13 22:15:40 +0200 <Ou42> so it's all or nothing?
2023-04-13 22:15:44 +0200 <geekosaur> yeh
2023-04-13 22:16:16 +0200 <Ou42> I'm kinda weary of that, but like I said, the slow and steady (debatable) progress setting up XMonad/Xmobar/Trayer is acceptable.
2023-04-13 22:16:27 +0200 <Ou42> so I might just go the "liskin" route.
2023-04-13 22:16:40 +0200 <Ou42> just slower
2023-04-13 22:19:55 +0200 <liskin> I think most people set everything up manually, so it's well documented
2023-04-13 22:21:06 +0200 <liskin> not really a tutorial kind of well documented, but arch wiki has lots of pages about individual pieces (like what to use for wifi and volume and ā€¦) and people's dotfiles can be an inspiration
2023-04-13 22:21:30 +0200 <liskin> some people like DistroTube have dotfiles intended for other people to use
2023-04-13 22:22:20 +0200 <liskin> unfortunately it lags a bit behind what we consider best practice, so I can't recommend that without geekosaur looking bad at me :-)
2023-04-13 22:22:43 +0200 <geekosaur> actually I'm fine with the arch wiki and consider it a very useful resource
2023-04-13 22:22:55 +0200 <geekosaur> I just disapprove of arch _packaging_
2023-04-13 22:23:25 +0200 <liskin> I meant DT's config
2023-04-13 22:23:34 +0200 <geekosaur> oh
2023-04-13 22:23:44 +0200 <geekosaur> I mostly ignore that šŸ™‚
2023-04-13 22:24:32 +0200 <geekosaur> I mean. I'm the one who uses xmonad under a DE, who am I to question others' ways of doing it?
2023-04-13 22:25:56 +0200 <geekosaur> I do question rivers a bit but that's mostly because I'm trying to maximize usable space, not show as much of a fancy background as possible šŸ™‚
2023-04-13 22:27:33 +0200 <Ou42> but getting `feh` to show wallpaper was such a thrill!
2023-04-13 22:28:09 +0200 <geekosaur> *ricers
2023-04-13 22:28:37 +0200 <geekosaur> also that's more /r/unixporn than DT
2023-04-13 22:28:49 +0200 <Ou42> using xrandr to manually turn off my laptop screen causes a glitch in the wallpaper display. I think there's some weird overlap of the monitors or something and when it's turned off it has a region of garbage... but I can reissue the `feh` cmd and the wallpaper returns too all its glory.
2023-04-13 22:29:49 +0200 <geekosaur> do you use a compositor? any chance it's getting confused about a shadow on the disabled monitor?
2023-04-13 22:29:54 +0200 <Ou42> very tempting. I dunno if I like MATE even if I swtich WM though.
2023-04-13 22:31:55 +0200 <geekosaur> I went with MATE because I like GNOME 2 (MATE is the supported fork of that) and you can't really use xmonad with GNOME 3-based stuff including Cinnamon (well, there's gnome-flashback on some systems) even if I did like it
2023-04-13 22:32:09 +0200 <geekosaur> I used to run KDE but KDE4 drove me away for some reason
2023-04-13 22:33:01 +0200malook(~Thunderbi@176.18.63.131)
2023-04-13 22:33:18 +0200 <geekosaur> I preferred the older setup to Plasma
2023-04-13 22:34:30 +0200 <Ou42> anybody ever run Xmonad on top of xfce?
2023-04-13 22:34:36 +0200 <geekosaur> but there are others, xfce4, lxde, lxqt, etc.
2023-04-13 22:35:01 +0200 <geekosaur> yes, we have a somewhat out of date https://wiki.haskell.org/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_XFCE
2023-04-13 22:37:33 +0200 <Ou42> nice. the rabbit hole is quite deep
2023-04-13 22:38:14 +0200 <Ou42> I have a ton of Q's but (a) if I ramble/stick around long enough you answer them before I ask or (b) they're off topic.
2023-04-13 22:38:54 +0200 <Ou42> like, does anybody here have any Advent of Code solutions ( preferably in Haskell) online?
2023-04-13 22:39:39 +0200 <geekosaur> ask in #haskell, plenty of people have github or gitlab repos with past AoCs
2023-04-13 22:40:08 +0200 <Ou42> compositor ... only what huh, not sure if it was DistroTube's recommendation or something we talked about here. but yes, compton's successor.
2023-04-13 22:40:18 +0200 <geekosaur> picom, yes
2023-04-13 22:40:19 +0200 <Ou42> I can't rem off hand if it's mentioned in the xmonad.org tut.
2023-04-13 22:41:40 +0200Ou42checks
2023-04-13 22:41:50 +0200 <Ou42> it is not. So that was one "borrow" from DT's stuff.
2023-04-13 22:42:13 +0200 <Ou42> w/o it, the hover effect and/or drag/drop of a url to bookmark it was unslightly.
2023-04-13 22:51:11 +0200 <Ou42> geekosaur: when you said, "sadly the dconf thing for the window manager can't be done by a separate xsessions entry as far as I can determine" you mean there can be only one MATE in the desktops list?
2023-04-13 22:51:34 +0200 <geekosaur> you can have more than one but you can't control what dconf entries it uses
2023-04-13 22:52:06 +0200 <geekosaur> and since all its configuration is via dconf that means you can't have them behave differently
2023-04-13 22:53:14 +0200 <Ou42> thanks for clarifying.
2023-04-13 22:55:30 +0200 <Ou42> I'm so used to being here at 3-5am this feels weird. I'm gonna go take a stab at a few things. Thanks again.
