2022-09-14 08:28:30 +0200 <Quelklef> hello hello
2022-09-14 08:29:10 +0200 <Quelklef> so I've been on XMonad for a while and uh, wow it's so cool
2022-09-14 08:29:25 +0200 <Quelklef> i just love the software-as-a-library/software-as-a-framework paradigm
2022-09-14 08:29:45 +0200 <Quelklef> anyway, I came from i3 and there is exactly one thing i really miss, which is the ability to arbitrarily nest layouts
2022-09-14 08:30:27 +0200 <Quelklef> in i3 it was natural and common to, for instance, have a stacked layout which contains a split layout which contains a split layout
2022-09-14 08:31:52 +0200 <Quelklef> by this description it sounds like what I want is just "sublayouts", which is implemented by XMonad.Layout.Sublayouts
2022-09-14 08:32:21 +0200 <Quelklef> but this is not quite right -- iirc, a sublayout is unable to "escape' its innermost layout, whereas in i3 you can move a window up and down the tree as you please
2022-09-14 08:32:52 +0200benin0(~benin@183.82.204.57)
2022-09-14 08:33:01 +0200 <Quelklef> for instance, if I have a stacked layout containing a split layout, it's desirable to take a window from the split layout and move it into the stack
2022-09-14 08:33:41 +0200 <Quelklef> I was hoping that someone had implemented an i3 clone in XMonad (my dream), but it seems that's not the case
2022-09-14 08:33:59 +0200 <Quelklef> I'm wondering what other directions I may have at my disposal to allow such a flexible config
2022-09-14 08:34:46 +0200 <[Leary]> There's a BSP(WM) clone if that's similar enough. I never used i3 so I'm not sure from your description.
2022-09-14 08:35:14 +0200 <Quelklef> let me take a look
2022-09-14 08:36:04 +0200 <Quelklef> oh, is this XMonad.Layout.BinarySpacePartition?
2022-09-14 08:36:14 +0200 <Quelklef> I'm actually using that already as one of my layouts :-)
2022-09-14 08:36:23 +0200 <Quelklef> it's definitely good stuff, but not quite as powerful as I'm looking for
2022-09-14 08:45:37 +0200 <[Leary]> Well, I don't think there's much for it. You can adjust to what's possible with the layouts already written, or you can learn Haskell and write what you want for yourself. The former might be better than it sounds---most of the other tiling WMs use layouts that are powerful but overly manual as a result, while xmonad's tend towards the more automated.
2022-09-14 08:47:38 +0200 <Quelklef> I actually know Haskell, but from what I can tell working with the XMonad API thus far emulating all of i3 would be a rather tall task
2022-09-14 08:48:23 +0200 <Quelklef> I honestly think I prefer the manual-but-powerful over the automated for WMs, which is unfortunate for me because I prefer XMonad otherwise
2022-09-14 08:48:47 +0200 <Quelklef> anyway, sounds like I gotta suck it up and put the effort in or learn to live with slightly lower QoL:^) thanks
