2021-09-29 09:05:07 +0200 <Solid> elonsroadster[m]: hence my mentioning of "easy"; imo nix is very much at the opposite end of that
2021-09-29 09:11:39 +0200 <elonsroadster[m]> Solid how so? I keep seeing people say this and it's simply not true.
2021-09-29 09:15:58 +0200 <Solid> If you see many people say if maybe there's some truth to it after all ;) I will freely admit that my experience with nix is rather minimal (lack of documentation made me lose interest) but with regards to Haskell packages it always felt like a lot of extra effort (over literally `stack install`) for spurious advantages
2021-09-29 09:16:57 +0200 <Solid> what I can read from xmonad/#332 is that it's kind of non-trivial to get a proper setup where one can make changes to core/contrib and quickly recompile xmonad
2021-09-29 09:17:02 +0200 <Solid> which seems a bit ridiculous to me

2021-09-29 09:41:33 +0200 <sibi> I use nixos daily in my main work and home machine and I will admit that it's not easy. There is an initial learning curve there and I wouldn't recommend it to others if they want something simple.
2021-09-29 09:44:55 +0200 <deebo> if i want to use xmonad but have some "modern desktop" features (tray + network etc widgets, calendar, sound...) what's the easiest combo?
2021-09-29 09:45:24 +0200 <deebo> i've been using ubuntu mate with `xmonad --replace` for years but i have some really annoying sleep wakeup issues and need to change something
2021-09-29 09:54:07 +0200 <sibi> deebo: There are some recommendations here: https://xmonad.org/download.html
2021-09-29 10:08:13 +0200 <elonsroadster[m]> <Solid> "what I can read from xmonad/#332..." <- Well I mean that's a different question isn't it? Being able to easily contribute is separate from the question of what the easiest way to set things up is. I just think that this idea that it's hard is not founded on anything, and in fact, setting it up with nix does not even require you to have anything except for nix itself to be installed.
2021-09-29 10:11:54 +0200 <elonsroadster[m]> <deebo> "if i want to use xmonad but have..." <- Taffybar was made with this (especially the tray part in mind) xmobar is what most xmobar users use these days, but tray support is not included (although there are ways to set up stalonetray or trader to work with this). However trader and stalone tray are xembed tray implementations, which is deprecated and generally quite broken, imo.

2021-09-29 18:37:06 +0200 <Solid> broken how? rolling over to a new stack resolver and having things break would seem like an upstream issue that we need to fix (but the CI also runs on the most recently released GHC, so I think we'd catch that before stackage updates)

2021-09-29 18:47:59 +0200 <jakefromstatefar> Then, because of how cabal and stack work, it took a lot of effort to hunt down everything to remove.

2021-09-29 18:51:38 +0200 <Solid> that mostly sounds like cabal issues, of which I have absolutely no idea (uninstalling a stack package is quite literally deleting the directory and the symlink in ~/.local/bin for me)
