2023-11-04 15:24:42 +0100 <Manu38> Hi there, question of the day : I am using `dynamicEasySBs` to have several status bars adapting to my 3 setups : laptop only, laptop + 1 monitor at home, laptop + 2 monitor at work.
2023-11-04 15:25:42 +0100 <Manu38> It works perfectly fine, I am happy with that. Nevertheless, with this new setting (before I add only a single bar in the primary monitor), my shortcut to toggle full screen does not work anymore. Here it is
2023-11-04 15:25:56 +0100 <Manu38> `("M-b", addName "Toggle noborders/full" $ sendMessage (MT.Toggle NBFULL) >> sendMessage ToggleStruts)`
2023-11-04 15:26:47 +0100 <Manu38> By does not work anymore I mean that the focused window is properly set to full screen size, but it is **behind** the status bar, and not on top of it.
2023-11-04 15:27:27 +0100 <geekosaur> do you need `lowerOnStart` in the xmobar config?
2023-11-04 15:27:41 +0100 <Manu38> Again, I know that speaking fluent Haskell would help me to solve that, but for now I am not able to do it, so I am asking for help here.

2023-11-04 15:38:25 +0100 <Manu38> geekosaur It was that, thank you very much.
2023-11-04 15:38:57 +0100 <Manu38> The lesson I learned then is : I really need to understand this concept of "stack"
2023-11-04 15:39:43 +0100 <geekosaur> heh.. with a tiling window manager that's pretty much the only place it shows up 🙂
2023-11-04 15:39:53 +0100 <geekosaur> we don't stack, we tile
2023-11-04 15:41:40 +0100 <Manu38> Yes but I have see somewhere a notion of "stack layout" if I am not wrong.
2023-11-04 15:43:54 +0100 <Manu38> Also, my above shortcut (that of course I copied/pasted from the web without understanding it) now sets properly full screen but does not remove the window border (while its text suggests it should), any idea on that too ?
2023-11-04 15:52:16 +0100Enrico63(~Enrico63@81.109.143.226)
2023-11-04 15:54:56 +0100 <Enrico63> Hello there, people. I'd like to understand why the _Install XMonad_ guide for Arch tells how to use pacman for installing the dependencies but not for installing xmonad itself. Being on Arch, I'd rather use pacman for installing stuff, including xmonad, but I've tried, and that doesn't work (I get `Could not find module ‘XMonad’`, besically).
2023-11-04 15:54:56 +0100 <Enrico63> So is it necessary that one uses cabal (or stack) for installing xmonad, rather than the native OS package manager?
2023-11-04 16:00:32 +0100 <Manu38> Hi Enrico63 welcome. (and can't answer, I am on Ubuntu, and I successfully used `apt` to install `XMonad`)
2023-11-04 16:02:13 +0100 <Enrico63> Thanks for the welcome. Well, I guess that means that xmonad source itself doesn't do anything to prevent a given OS from knowing how to install xmonad (I'm assuming `apt` is not smart to run cabal/stack, ahah). So probably I'm doing something wrong on Arch.
2023-11-04 16:02:48 +0100 <Enrico63> By the way, I've asked on Arch forum, but haven't got an answer yet :/ https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2129615#p2129615
2023-11-04 16:06:10 +0100 <Manu38> You will probably have an answer soon here :)
2023-11-04 16:06:46 +0100 <Manu38> I asked a lot of thing the last couple of days (I just started using `Xmonad`).
2023-11-04 16:07:11 +0100 <Manu38> And always got answers helping me.
2023-11-04 16:10:01 +0100 <Enrico63> I also want to start. I rember a few years ago I couldn't run X on multiple consoles, so I couldn't play around with xmonad without logging out from my everyday WM (i3). Now I've discovered I can indeed have multiple WMs at the same time on different consoles, so it's time I play around with xmonad!
2023-11-04 16:10:50 +0100 <Manu38> Great !
2023-11-04 16:14:11 +0100 <geekosaur> you can also use something like Xephyr
2023-11-04 16:14:24 +0100 <geekosaur> (which I use to test other people's configs locally)
2023-11-04 16:15:16 +0100 <geekosaur> the problem withy arch is all its haskell packages are installed dynamically, which means your config breaks every time you update a depenency using pacman.
2023-11-04 16:15:26 +0100 <geekosaur> with shared library loading errors
2023-11-04 16:17:55 +0100 <Enrico63> xmonad --recompile seems to be what solves that issue, no?
2023-11-04 16:18:07 +0100 <geekosaur> we _very strongly_ recommend installing from hackage or got on arch, to avoid this. if you absolutely insist on using pacman, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xmonad#Problems_with_finding_shared_libraries_after_update
2023-11-04 16:18:31 +0100 <geekosaur> sure, just make sure you do it every time you run pacman, or configure pacman to do it for you
2023-11-04 16:19:34 +0100 <Enrico63> got on Arch is got or git?
2023-11-04 16:20:19 +0100 <Enrico63> That would be viable, yes. But I think at the moment the problem is beyond the shared libraries not being found :/
2023-11-04 16:24:56 +0100 <geekosaur> git
2023-11-04 16:24:58 +0100 <geekosaur> typo
2023-11-04 16:25:50 +0100 <geekosaur> arch doesn't split packages into bin and devel packages so installing xmonad should get you the library as well (but don't forget to install xmonad-contrib if you want anything from that, and you probably do)
2023-11-04 16:26:04 +0100 <geekosaur> cna't help beyond that, sorry
