2023-06-13 19:34:04 +0200 <ke8cqc> Hi there. For some reason xmobar is not starting when I open up xmonad. Here are the contents of my xmonad.hs and xmobar.conf: https://dpaste.com/EWUQKYGRS When I invoke it from the command line it works. Both the binaries xmonad and xmobar are in /usr/bin, so there are no permission issues and I believe there are also no $PATH errors. Nothing relating to xmobar shows up in ~/.xsession-errors and I get no errors when starting
2023-06-13 19:34:04 +0200 <ke8cqc> xmonad. I chatted at length with geekosaur yesterday, but no joy.

2023-06-13 20:24:32 +0200 <ke8cqc> geekosaur: Do your stuff!!!
2023-06-13 20:24:41 +0200 <horzion> calm down
2023-06-13 20:24:56 +0200 <ke8cqc> I'm just being a dork.
2023-06-13 20:26:03 +0200 <geekosaur> the problem there is you're expecting it to "unwrap" myStatusBar into withEasySB. Haskell doesn't work that way (Lisp does, at least with `,@`)
2023-06-13 20:26:36 +0200 <horzion> idk, it have it the same without defToggleStrutKey
2023-06-13 20:26:41 +0200 <horzion> no errors with that one
2023-06-13 20:27:24 +0200 <geekosaur> defToggleStrutsKey is in the wrong place as a result; it needs to be inside the parens
2023-06-13 20:28:35 +0200 <horzion> good to know
2023-06-13 20:32:44 +0200 <ke8cqc> So do I put defToggleStrutKey in the parens alongside myStatusBar, in its own parens, or in the parens in main :: ID () ???
2023-06-13 20:34:15 +0200 <geekosaur> withEasySB (myStatusBar defToggleStrutsKey)
2023-06-13 20:34:31 +0200 <ke8cqc> Ok I'll give that a go...
2023-06-13 20:37:28 +0200ke8cqc(~ke8cqc@2600:1700:fb60:62d0:c5d:5492:ca40:6e8) (Quit: Leaving)

2023-06-13 20:43:50 +0200 <ke8cqc> xmobar.hs and error: https://dpaste.com/GBJRBR7V2
2023-06-13 20:44:27 +0200 <horzion> quick tip: xmonad wont compile if there is an error in the config. so no need to restart. so check first if there are any errors in the xmonad.errors.
2023-06-13 20:45:02 +0200 <geekosaur> no xmonad.hs there
2023-06-13 20:45:30 +0200 <geekosaur> but you're calling sttausBar, doesn't that want to be myStatusBar?
2023-06-13 20:46:03 +0200 <horzion> hard to tell without xmonad.hs
2023-06-13 20:46:15 +0200 <horzion> but yeah, thats what i thought too
2023-06-13 20:46:42 +0200 <ke8cqc> https://dpaste.com/869F99QGR
2023-06-13 20:47:04 +0200 <ke8cqc> Sorry about that.
2023-06-13 20:47:06 +0200 <horzion> yeah, that needs to be myStatusBar, not just statusBar
2023-06-13 20:48:08 +0200 <geekosaur> hm, and it looks like I was wring before, defToggleStrutsKey goes to withEasySB not myStatusBar
2023-06-13 20:48:30 +0200 <ke8cqc> Ok. so I just need do xmonad --recompile???
2023-06-13 20:48:49 +0200 <horzion> do it in your terminal, if it errors out, upload new xmonad.errors
2023-06-13 20:53:40 +0200 <ke8cqc> https://dpaste.com/7MLR88NS5
2023-06-13 20:55:14 +0200 <ke8cqc> It's a lot more convenient because recompile puts the error in the stdout so I don't have to change directories.
2023-06-13 20:55:21 +0200 <horzion> yup
2023-06-13 20:55:31 +0200 <geekosaur> right, you missed what I said earlier whne I noted that moving defToggleStrutsKey was actually incorrect
2023-06-13 20:55:46 +0200 <geekosaur> [13 18:48:08] <geekosaur> hm, and it looks like I was wring before, defToggleStrutsKey goes to withEasySB not myStatusBar
2023-06-13 20:56:16 +0200 <horzion> well, you didnt particular state how exactly it should be done better. mind you, they seem to have zero programming knowledge and how to do it
2023-06-13 20:56:40 +0200 <geekosaur> yeh, I meant to go back to the earlier one
2023-06-13 20:56:44 +0200 <ke8cqc> Bubblegum and baling wire.
2023-06-13 20:57:22 +0200 <geekosaur> but I'm kinda floundering myself since I'm not especially familiar with this stuff; I don't use xmobar or withSB/withEasySB, I feed xmonad-log-applet over dbus
2023-06-13 20:57:49 +0200 <horzion> no worries, i made a mistake, you made one, everybody does. no big deal :D
2023-06-13 20:58:13 +0200 <ke8cqc> geekosaur: I concur with horizon.
2023-06-13 20:58:37 +0200 <ke8cqc> geekosaur: You're not floundering. I am.
2023-06-13 21:00:35 +0200 <horzion> anyways what geekosaur meant: ". withEasySB myStatusBar defToggleStrutsKey" instead of ". withEasySB (myStatusBar defToggleStrutsKey)" if i understood that correctly
2023-06-13 21:02:04 +0200 <geekosaur> yes
2023-06-13 21:02:05 +0200 <ke8cqc> I just got it to recompile without errors moving defToggleStrutsKey out of the parens.
2023-06-13 21:02:21 +0200 <ke8cqc> Restart???
2023-06-13 21:02:23 +0200 <geekosaur> I'm looking at https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-contrib-0.17.1/docs/XMonad-Hooks-StatusBar.html#v:withE…
2023-06-13 21:02:28 +0200 <geekosaur> sure
2023-06-13 21:02:41 +0200 <ke8cqc> I'll be back no matter what happens...

2023-06-13 21:04:03 +0200 <ke8cqc> No errors, but no xmobar either.
2023-06-13 21:05:09 +0200 <horzion> you are not autostarting any programs that may be overlaying xmobar?
2023-06-13 21:06:02 +0200 <ke8cqc> I don't think so.
2023-06-13 21:06:49 +0200 <ke8cqc> I don't have an autostart file in my home dir. I call all autostart programs in bspwm in it's config file.
2023-06-13 21:07:11 +0200 <ke8cqc> ... and those are the 2 WMs I have on this machine.
2023-06-13 21:08:39 +0200 <ke8cqc> It starts from the CLI.
2023-06-13 21:12:25 +0200 <ke8cqc> I need to get away from it now. I will be back. Thanks horizon and geekosaur. I appreciate the suggestions whether they worked or didn't.

2023-06-13 21:14:07 +0200 <horzion> we need to see the xmobar config later, cause i think they are missing UnsafeXMonadLog
2023-06-13 21:14:22 +0200exordiri(~ex@user/exordiri)
2023-06-13 21:14:31 +0200 <horzion> or some other config disabling it
2023-06-13 21:28:19 +0200 <geekosaur> they showed the xmobar config earlier, but that shouldn't lead to a state where it works from a terminal
2023-06-13 21:28:55 +0200 <geekosaur> https://dpaste.com/7Q4ZTBWSR at the bottom
2023-06-13 21:31:44 +0200 <geekosaur> (where "works" = "even displays at all, never mind clickable")
2023-06-13 21:32:26 +0200 <geekosaur> iirc it just ignores the clickable stuff if you don't use UnsafeXMonadLog, it doesn't exit
2023-06-13 21:36:45 +0200 <geekosaur> it still feels like somehow it's something wrong with $PATH, or possibly shared objects. I should have had them change "xmobar" to "sh -c /usr/bin/xmobar >/tmp/xmobar.log 2>&1"
2023-06-13 21:36:45 +0200 <horzion> hm
2023-06-13 21:46:22 +0200 <geekosaur> actually, to keep from breaking the restart stuff and to test $PATH that should be "sh -c 'exec xmobar' >/tmp/xmobar.log 2>&1"
2023-06-13 22:02:28 +0200 <geekosaur> "exec >/tmp/xmobar.log 2>&1; exec sh -c 'exec xmobar'"
2023-06-13 22:02:38 +0200 <geekosaur> to be unbearably precise 😛
