2023-05-16 13:31:32 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> Do we have a discussion place for wayland future? (if existent obv.)
2023-05-16 13:32:34 +0200 <geekosaur> nowhere other than here that I'm aware of
2023-05-16 13:33:52 +0200 <geekosaur> https://github.com/L-as/waymonad is still the last word on that and I think they're planning to do some work on it this summer
2023-05-16 13:34:24 +0200 <geekosaur> although @mangoiv:matrix.org seems to be planning to do some work toward it during ZuriHac
2023-05-16 13:34:57 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> interesting
2023-05-16 13:36:01 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> also, any ideas to what kind of limitations it will solve that xmonad currently has?
2023-05-16 13:36:26 +0200 <geekosaur> nope
2023-05-16 13:36:56 +0200 <geekosaur> if anything it will add limitations, for example there's no standardized equivalent to `className`/`appName` in Wayland
2023-05-16 13:37:12 +0200 <geekosaur> which will make `manageHook`s difficult
2023-05-16 13:37:17 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> reminds of something, will we be able to port contrib or do we need to rewrite it?
2023-05-16 13:37:36 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> geekosaur: yes it will! Had an issue with this in hyprland when I tested it out a couple of days ago
2023-05-16 13:37:43 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> the solution was just finding things by title
2023-05-16 13:38:05 +0200 <geekosaur> probably require a lot of rewriting since we're a thin layer around Xlib. can't even reasonably port to xcb, much less Wayland
2023-05-16 13:38:56 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> crap.. that is going to take some time and effort. Was planning on learning rust during summer but I think I should replace it with haskell and help out where I can
2023-05-16 13:38:59 +0200 <geekosaur> which is a pity as there's a few places that would benefit from lower level interfaces than Xlib offers
2023-05-16 13:39:17 +0200 <ChaoticMist[m]> geekosaur: examples?
2023-05-16 13:40:30 +0200 <geekosaur> I've had a working `pasteSelection` (used to be in XMonad.Util.Paste but it reliably hung xmonad) on my to-do list for years, finally pulled it up only to realize that there's no way to reasonably integrate the selection negotiation into the `handleEventHook` so it can't really be done properly

2023-05-16 22:28:11 +0200 <liskin> I wish we could write the compositor part in Rust or something
2023-05-16 22:29:30 +0200 <geekosaur> https://www.reddit.com/r/rust/comments/biq864/giving_up_on_wlrootsrs/ 😞
2023-05-16 22:29:32 +0200 <liskin> having it in Haskell through C bindings seems like a terrible idea, having it in Haskell with whatever magical crypto-use-cases-inspired-generated-bindingsy-whatever that Las is planning seems like… I don't want to publicly state my opinion, and having it in pure C seems silly too

2023-05-16 22:32:04 +0200 <geekosaur> (come to think of it, that doesn't seem like a good advertisement for rust…)
2023-05-16 22:38:07 +0200 <liskin> hm, interesting read
2023-05-16 22:38:24 +0200 <liskin> I was wondering why there's still no good wlroots bindings
2023-05-16 22:38:47 +0200 <liskin> this Smithay thing seems to be fairly active though, but then if one looks into its github issues, not sure if it's good enough
