2022-09-09 09:42:51 +0200 <Sose> unexpected "s" ? there's no "s"

2022-09-09 10:35:11 +0200 <Solid> Guest266: you should not be using XMonadLog when using pipes (as the tutorial says)
2022-09-09 10:35:51 +0200 <Solid> (you want StdinReader instead)
2022-09-09 10:36:10 +0200 <Solid> also "xmobar -options -foo -bar" looks like a mistake
2022-09-09 10:36:53 +0200 <Solid> friendly advice: actually follow the tutorial and start with a blank config; building things up from scratch is much easier than starting with something you don't understand and then trying to cram other things you don't understand into it

2022-09-09 11:28:42 +0200 <mesaoptimizer> Sose: I believe that your additional bindings overwrite the originals. Have you tried it? Either way, what I do is I remove keybindings I don't like using `removeKeysP`
2022-09-09 11:29:13 +0200 <mesaoptimizer> for example: "`removeKeysP` ["M-" ++ [n] | n <- ['a' .. 'z']]" removes all mod-LETTER keybinds

2022-09-09 12:41:39 +0200 <thyriaen> thanks
2022-09-09 12:41:55 +0200 <mesaoptimizer> in essence, you'd need to have a KeySym for the modkey and I didn't find a KeySym for the modkey
2022-09-09 12:42:23 +0200 <mesaoptimizer> but I may be wrong
2022-09-09 12:46:02 +0200 <fizzie> In plain X terms, the modifier keys do have keysyms and are also normal keypresses (just check `xev` for example), but I don't know if XMonad keybindings and/or X grabs would allow for handling them separately. You'd definitely have to do *something* to ignore those presses where you ended up pressing something else while the modifier key was held down.
2022-09-09 12:51:16 +0200 <fizzie> Or more accurately, the keys used as modifiers *also* have keysyms. There's no keysym for "mod4" per se, but there's a xK_Super_L (etc.) for the keys mapped to mod4 here.

2022-09-09 13:02:17 +0200 <Sose> I'm using default keybinds for mod-j and mod-k to switch focus but it feels.. backwards. it would make more sense to me if the keybinds were reversed

2022-09-09 13:04:42 +0200 <Sose> I was looking for tips how to change it only for myself :D
2022-09-09 13:06:18 +0200 <Sose> ah, I managed to find https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-0.17.1/docs/src/XMonad.Config.html
2022-09-09 13:06:22 +0200 <Sose> maybe I can manage
2022-09-09 13:08:20 +0200 <Solid> thyriaen: Try mapping <Super_L> (or whatever your modkey is) to an action and see what happens :D
2022-09-09 13:09:43 +0200 <Solid> Sose: changing the default bindings isn't difficult; though there is _some_ internal logic to this (M-j goes *down* the stack and M-k goes *up*, much like these keys are used in e.g. vim)
2022-09-09 13:18:13 +0200 <Sose> Solid: it wasn't too difficult once I found the source for the default keybinds so I could see what they do now. I understand the vim logic but I'm not very familiar with vim keys myself
2022-09-09 13:18:41 +0200 <Sose> maybe I will get super confused with up/down if I decide to learn the vim keys some day :)
2022-09-09 13:18:59 +0200 <Solid> at the end of the day what counts is what you're more comfortable with :)
2022-09-09 13:21:46 +0200 <Sose> I'm going to propose that vim swap j/k around because it feels more natural to me reversed :D
2022-09-09 13:21:55 +0200 <Solid> :D
