2021-11-30 00:28:01 +0100 <dissociate[m]> Hey all. Are there any special considerations when gaming using xmonad? if i hold down a key in-game it gets 'stuck' and i need to double tap the key again or the behaviour is as if i'm holding the key down.
2021-11-30 00:29:08 +0100 <dissociate[m]> i've only tried a few source games so far. Black Mesa and DOD: Source. seems to be any key that i hold down for anything longer than about 5 seconds. The games function as expected when playing under Budgie.
2021-11-30 00:31:00 +0100 <liskin> dissociate[m]: that looks more like as if you enabled some accessibility settings such as sticky keys
2021-11-30 00:31:14 +0100 <liskin> I've been gaming with xmonad for years and never encountered this
2021-11-30 00:32:33 +0100 <liskin> "xkbset q" will tell you what accessibility toggles are on
2021-11-30 00:32:42 +0100 <dissociate[m]> hmmm, i'll have to look into that thanks liskin. i also do see the active window border around the game screen. Is there anything special i need to do to make the game truely fullscreen?
2021-11-30 00:33:22 +0100 <liskin> ewmh, ewmhFullscreen and possibly also smartBorders should solve all your fullscreen/border issues
2021-11-30 00:38:12 +0100 <dissociate[m]> thanks liskin 🙂 I'm quite new to the world of xmonad custom linux builds in general, so this is all very helpful. This gives me a lot to go on. Appreciate the help
2021-11-30 00:42:10 +0100 <liskin> dissociate[m]: you're welcome :-)

2021-11-30 13:59:29 +0100 <vermoot_> Would it be doable to write a module like BorderResize but for floating windows?
2021-11-30 14:00:32 +0100 <vermoot_> I'm guessing yes, since you *can* resize floating windows by other means, and you can probably detect the mouse's potition relative to those just like for BorderResize?
2021-11-30 14:00:53 +0100 <vermoot_> (disclaimer, I've looked at BorderResize's source, but haven't been able to understand much of it)

2021-11-30 14:31:39 +0100 <HAL[m]> I have layoutscreen enabled, how can I avoidStructs on both screens?
2021-11-30 14:33:06 +0100 <HAL[m]> `XMonad.Layout.LayoutScreens`
2021-11-30 14:34:02 +0100 <HAL[m]> currently it will only toggle on the focused screen.
2021-11-30 14:40:59 +0100 <geekosaur> avoidStruts is per workspace, so I'm not sure that's possible
2021-11-30 14:42:17 +0100 <geekosaur> @tell abhixec I just noticed in the logs your question about avoiding new windows displaying the master window. https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-contrib-0.17.0/docs/XMonad-Hooks-InsertPosition.html may be your friend
2021-11-30 14:42:17 +0100 <lambdabot> Consider it noted.
2021-11-30 14:43:49 +0100 <HAL[m]> geekosaur: noted and thanks. :)
2021-11-30 14:44:45 +0100 <geekosaur> it might be possible to have a keybinding that cycles over the screens and hjdes/reveals struts on all of them; might be a bit finicky though
2021-11-30 14:44:56 +0100 <geekosaur> goodness, I can't type today
2021-11-30 14:44:59 +0100 <geekosaur> s/j/i
2021-11-30 14:45:22 +0100 <geekosaur> @tell abhixec sorry, displacing the master window
2021-11-30 14:45:22 +0100 <lambdabot> Consider it noted.
2021-11-30 14:46:09 +0100 <vermoot_> I can't decide myself if I want new windows to be added at the top or the bottom of the stack
2021-11-30 14:46:59 +0100 <vermoot_> Before xmonad I was used to new windows appearing at the bottom, so it's still a bit weird for me for them to appear in the master pane, but then again I think it makes more sense?
2021-11-30 14:47:39 +0100 <geekosaur> you might want to look at the module I linked as well. it gives you some flexibility in where new windows get placed
2021-11-30 14:47:46 +0100 <geekosaur> not just master pane, even
2021-11-30 14:48:19 +0100 <vermoot_> Yeah sure
2021-11-30 14:48:37 +0100 <vermoot_> But my problem isn't about how to do it, it's deciding what I want it to be :D
2021-11-30 14:49:07 +0100 <geekosaur> so try various options and see what you like best. not like it's difficult :)

2021-11-30 16:44:54 +0100 <Benzi-Junior> hey, I'm trying to build xmonad from source in order to work on my own development branch (I think I have spotted some issues that I can solve), I got the repo, and built and installed it, then I tried to run xinitrc with a custom config file that points to the locally built install
2021-11-30 16:45:08 +0100 <Benzi-Junior> but it just launched same as usual
2021-11-30 16:46:26 +0100 <Benzi-Junior> so I think the issue is that it doesn't see a change in my config and thus just runs my normal environment, so I tried to run the locally installed version with --recompile flag and it fails to find any packages

2021-11-30 16:50:07 +0100 <geekosaur> then you need to use stack to compile your config
2021-11-30 16:50:16 +0100 <geekosaur> stack hides stuff it builds inside itself
2021-11-30 16:50:34 +0100 <geekosaur> https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad/blob/master/TUTORIAL.md may be helpful, I think it provides a stack workflow
2021-11-30 16:51:15 +0100 <Benzi-Junior> oh ofc, so it needs to be "stack exec xmonad --flag xmonad:recompile" or something like that

2021-11-30 19:19:38 +0100 <fizzie> I do have a surprisingly-still-working stack-based XMonad setup, and it's basically (a) stack.yaml that has `packages: - xmonad-git - xmonad-contrib-git - my-config`, (b) git checkouts of xmonad and xmonad-contrib as the two subdirectories `xmonad-git` and `xmonad-contrib-git`, and (c) my own configuration in the `my-config` subdirectory, written up with a .cabal file that has `build-depends:` on
