2021-07-13 00:08:37 +0200 <geekosaur> diaspora[m], you can go well over 40 with something like XMonad.Actions.Plane
2021-07-13 00:09:14 +0200 <geekosaur> although performance can start to suffer because the workspace zippers are based on linked lists
2021-07-13 00:14:25 +0200 <diaspora[m]> Interesting, cheers. Is there a minimalist config somewhere which does nothing except set the number of workspaces and their names? XMonad is already installed, and once I have the workspaces configured I can start checking it out, switching between IceWM and XMonad without losing my existing bindings of applications to workspaces.
2021-07-13 00:15:37 +0200 <geekosaur> all you need is to change the definition of "workspaces" in the config record, and p-robably the keybindings that switch to or shift windows to them (unless you opt for the CycleWS solution instead)
2021-07-13 00:17:11 +0200 <geekosaur> Plane instead switches 10 workspaces at a time from one plane to another, creating planes as needed
2021-07-13 00:17:22 +0200 <geekosaur> so you can end up with a lot of workspaces. or completely lost :)
2021-07-13 00:19:52 +0200 <diaspora[m]> Looking now where that's configured. (Hehe, not lost because that's what I've been using for years on IceWM, but yeah, without cycling at least and no bar with switching buttons, it would be a pain initially.)
2021-07-13 00:20:13 +0200 <geekosaur> well, I mena lost just because of how it works
2021-07-13 00:20:26 +0200 <geekosaur> switch the wrong direction and wonder where all your workspaces went, etc.
2021-07-13 00:20:34 +0200 <geekosaur> Plane is a little weird
2021-07-13 00:23:01 +0200 <geekosaur> anyway you can also do things like assign wokrspaces to both mod+numeric and mod+function keys, and mod+control+numeric and mod+control+function (that gets you 36, or 40 if you add the 0 key for a workspace 10 in each plane)
2021-07-13 00:23:54 +0200 <geekosaur> you have to do a little work for keybindings but can mostly copy the default keybinding code for that
2021-07-13 00:25:50 +0200 <diaspora[m]> I've heard enough people say good things about XMonad that I'll endure a little pain while trying to find my windows again. Eventually I hope to replicate IceWM's auto-hide workspaces bar, which identifies where in the workspaces list one is.
2021-07-13 00:29:48 +0200diaspora[m]uploaded an image: (43KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/evil.red/iUHkDvWqQgUYnnydIGCZsaDM/icewm_workspac… >
2021-07-13 00:30:46 +0200 <diaspora[m]> A bar something like that. The current workspace (the 1st Web one there) is highlighted, so you always know where you are.
2021-07-13 00:33:30 +0200 <diaspora[m]> I know it won't be identical to that IceWM bar in XMonad, but hopefully auto-hide bars are supported and I can work my way towards something similar.
2021-07-13 00:35:20 +0200 <geekosaur> not built into xmonad but people make workspace bars with e.g, xmobar
2021-07-13 00:36:32 +0200 <diaspora[m]> I saw xmobar, but seemed very primitive, being essentially plain text.
2021-07-13 00:37:50 +0200 <diaspora[m]> Maybe the plain text was just an example, and it can do 3D buttons too.
2021-07-13 00:38:56 +0200 <geekosaur> no 3d but it supports icons
2021-07-13 00:39:10 +0200 <geekosaur> it's intended to be mininmalist though
2021-07-13 00:44:06 +0200 <diaspora[m]> Which implies that there are non-minimalist bars around too, hopefully. :-)
2021-07-13 00:45:32 +0200 <geekosaur> taffybar comes to mind although I don't know if it supports 3d either
2021-07-13 00:46:31 +0200 <geekosaur> you can pretty much choose your own status bar aside from ones that are too wired in (for example i3bar doesnt like working with anyhting other than i3, iirc)
2021-07-13 00:47:46 +0200 <geekosaur> I use xmonad with mate-panel although xmonad-log-applet doesn't do 3d either… but there's source so I could change that if I really wanted
2021-07-13 00:48:27 +0200 <diaspora[m]> Interesting, cheers.

2021-07-13 03:20:14 +0200 <Nosrep> you might have better luck wth taffybar or polybar (can't remember if that one's minimalist though)
2021-07-13 03:21:28 +0200 <geekosaur> they want 3d "buttons" which one def won't find in a minimalist bar, although I don't think many non-minimalist bars usefully offer it either

2021-07-13 08:50:24 +0200 <diaspora[m]> See the long and thin 1920x26 image I inlined above, which is a screencap of the auto-hide window running along the bottom of my IceWM w/m screen. Consistent with the 3D theme I have loaded into IceWM, it has named and 3D-shaded clickable buttons for selecting each of my 39 workspaces and some docked commands, as well as various other features like time display and network, memory and CPU graphs. So, it's rather featureful; I doubt it
2021-07-13 08:50:25 +0200 <diaspora[m]> could be called minimalist.
2021-07-13 09:28:12 +0200 <diaspora[m]> One of IceWM's features is a right-click menu that includes the ability to switch to a different w/m, one of several in a configurable list. I've added XMonad to that list, but I want to set up 39 named workspaces in xmonad before switching w/m to it. (Hopefully xmonad can similarly cede control back to IceWM if needed.)

Moving through your workspaces would then be like travelling through a sky-scraper with glass floors, looking downwards, so everything in all workspaces is visible unless covered by something in a workspace above it. (The deepest workspace would carry your root
2021-07-13 19:45:43 +0200 <diaspora[m]> window image.)
2021-07-13 19:45:47 +0200 <diaspora[m]> In effect it would be unification of tiled and stacking modes. :-)

2021-07-13 20:15:51 +0200 <backleet> Solid: if I understood correctly, screenBorder defines gap between 4 sides of screen and outer side of windows, and windowBorder defines gap outside of each window, if that's the case there's no way to do it like in dwm

2021-07-13 20:31:18 +0200 <backleet> Solid: thanks, but I don't think I have enough knowledge on it to do it. My first assumption was correct. It doesn't work like in dwm. in dwm gaps don't go around windows, rather there are inner and outer gaps. outer gaps work in xmonad = screenBorder parameter of X.L.Spacing. But inner gaps != dwm's inner gaps, since windowBorders parameters puts gaps around each window instead of actual inner
2021-07-13 20:31:21 +0200 <backleet> gaps. I am not sure if it's achieveable in xmonad, to make inner vertical gap between windows bigger than others, did you understand?

2021-07-13 22:27:56 +0200 <aplainzetakind> geekosaur: I probably didn't get how --package-env is supposed to work.
2021-07-13 22:28:50 +0200 <aplainzetakind> So I did `cabal install xmonad`, then `cabal install --lib xmonad --package-en=xmonad` and the same for xmonad-contrib.
2021-07-13 22:29:03 +0200 <aplainzetakind> But the imports in my config are not found.
